If your like many IT Administrators or Managers you may be wanting to use VMWare ESX Server for virtualizing servers but may meet resistance from others in your department or business unit.
Many people are gun-shy on putting business critical applications on VMWare Virtual Servers and may resist if you try to go whole hog virtualizing these applications in the face of such resistance.
We found a successful introduction to VMWare ESX and virtual servers could be done by choosing to virtualize older systems and utilize VMWare initially to perform other functions besides replacing physical hardware for critical systems.
Consolidate older systems and stand alone processes: We had many large older servers that needed to be running but were not worthy of equipment upgrades.
Everyone in IT wanted these boxes out of the server room but the data needed to be available in case of an audit or historical need. Some systems performed low level processing on a scheduled basis. We imaged theses systems to VMWare ESX virtual servers using Ghost and an in place upgrade to get
them booting again. We were able to run eight servers on a two processor Dell Blade server.
Use
VMWare for a Development and Staging Environment: Today most organizations are moving to a structure where they utilize development and staging servers in addition to their production servers.
VMWare Virtual Servers running on ESX make great environments to use Dev and Staging servers without adding a bunch of servers to your data center.
Using Citrix Metaframe Installation Manager?
Use VMWare Virtual Servers for your packager. If you use Installation Manager for Citrix Metaframe Enterprise you will need a clean system running the same operating system as your Citrix server.
Using VMWare Virtual servers as your packager allows you to keep a clean packager without adding hardware and rebuilding servers in your data center.
We used the ideas above to get value from
VMWare ESX Server and Virtual Servers in a "safe" environment. This provided a proof of concept for the gun-shy doubters and has paved the way for us to use VMWare ESX Server in more critical environments.

Virtualisation using VMware has proven itself to be highly beneficial to companies of all sizes by making maximum use of the server resources available. In addition the reduced running costs in terms of power and cooling offers an ongoing benefit to those companies that make the switch to VMware hosting.
Benefits of outsourcing For years now server virtualisation has been helping businesses gain tangible benefits from their existing investment in server hardware by making fuller use of existing resources. As companies grow the decision to be made is whether to increase the resources in house or outsource their VMware requirements to a hosting provider. The benefits of using a VMware hosting provider are multiple: Lower capital expenditure Budget constraints are making it hard for IT managers to buy the resources they need to expand. For example when your SAN runs out of storage you need to buy another expensive unit even if your requirement is only for a few gigabytes. Often the cost per gigabyte is higher for smaller sized SANs further penalising your business.
In contrast the storage provided by VMware hosting providers will be provisioned on a much larger scale (often at a higher specification) thus reducing your overall cost of ownership. Flexibility Often resources are needed for short periods of time or for specific projects that are hard to provision using in-house servers. The cost of keeping servers available in house for such projects would be prohibitive and with limited scope for scalability. In contrast a VMware hosting company will be able to provide you with the resources you need at very short notice.
The cost to your company is significantly less even if the resources are kept for the longer term. VMware Technical Management The better hosted VMware environments are at a fully enterprise level, which would be out of reach for most small to medium sized businesses. High performance SAN systems with snapshots and replication are often included as standard and the hardware will be specifically built for VMware hosting. In addition the staff at the VMware hosting provider will be fully focused on the VMware environment which will benefit you in the event of a disaster. This contrasts with poor technical ability found in many smaller companies that have in-house VMware environments.
Summary A hosted VMware environment gives companies the chance to gain more business advantages from their VMware environment whilst reducing their costs and management time. In todays times of budget contstraints a hosted VMware environment offers a lower total cost of ownership and higher VMware productivity. Companies looking for VMware hosting will find the services offered by StratoGen suitable. A VMware hosting video is available that offers a description of the service.
